Strong Roots is a Tshwane South African-based group that was created to fill the gap that has been made by stereotyping of music genres in the City by masterminds of the industry. The group comes with a new style of fusing Tribal House Music with the element of African Drums, while at the same time accommodating Tshwane’s own Sgicha (Pretoria unique style of instruments and lyrics), to give the album a perfect originality. At the front of the group is Nicholas Matji, popularly known as Zulu. He took the music industry by storm with his debut song, Naja, which he released in 2004, under the stable of House Therapy Records. He became popularly known as Zulu Naja, across the country. This was a beginning of a new dawn for the humble Soshanguve young man. The song saw the singer’s music career, slowly but surely growing and he became a household name. Naja also took his name step further when it was re-released by the House Music muso, Oskido. It enjoyed airplay on both radio and TV, but later created controversy when it was argued whether it should be played on air or not because some people found the lyrics offending. BUT the arguments gave the song more justice as it became more popular. That did not make Zulu back down. In 2005, he released another hit track, Voroso. It became a household song and just like the first song, Voroso was a bang. It was loved by people of all ages mainly because of its simple and closer-to-home meaning of average people living in the townships.

Then in 2006 another Zulu-style song was released. Ndia-Ndia is a song that Zulu collaborated of Jozi-based and acclaimed DJ Cleo. The song was a reflection of the apartheid era and its way of life to the black community. The duo, once again shook waves with the song. Now Zulu, matured and stronger, has merged with DJ Lady M, a female Dee-jay who has been making people dance in Tshwane and the local townships and Ma Vee. Having grown up being loving music, DJ Lady M followed her dream of being listened by people. Being part of Strong Roots gives her the opportunity to release melodies in her head with the talents of Zulu and Ma Vee. Ma Vee is the third member of the group. Having grown up in North of Tshwane it was easy for him to enter the music industry. He started as a live band performer and blessed stages in various night clubs and pubs around Tshwane. With this album, Matimba - meaning power, things will never be the same again. It is a powerful 14- tracked album whereby the trio worked around the clock to see that is was done to perfection. The collaboration of the three is the fresh breeze of music that will take the genre to new heights. The uncompromising involvement of DJ Nyekx & Bojo Mujo as producers in the project is also a big factor that promises breath taking melody and songs. Matimba comprises of diversified African cultures with soulful house songs. Don’t be left out without a copy, get to the nearest music store and make sure you secure it, because you cannot survive this festive season without Matimba - You will be powerless!
